In early 2013 the grants system changed when the Government introduced its new schemes: the Green Deal and Energy Company Obligation (or ECO). These new initiatives offer householders funding and finance for a large variety of energy efficiency measures.
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO)
The ECO is a scheme aimed at helping those who are on low incomes, benefits or who live in specific parts of the country don't miss out on home energy improvements. ECO funding is made up of three different elements and you may qualify for grant funding if you fit into one or more of these categories.
If you’re in receipt of certain benefits (pension credit, income and disability related benefits) you could qualify for up to 100% funding towards insulating your home, and replacing your old boiler.
Homes with solid walls or difficult to insulate cavities can qualify for funding towards the cost of insulation, regardless of income or benefits.
Funding is also available to parts of the country recognised as having properties in need of support – and some of these areas are in Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.
The Green Deal
If you don’t qualify for any grants towards home improvements, help may still be available to get measures – without any upfront cost.
The Green Deal is a new initiative allowing you to access funding to make energy improvements – and then pay the cost back through the savings you make on your energy bills.
Improvements could include new boilers, heating systems, loft or wall insulation, draught-proofing, double or secondary glazing, lighting, renewable energy, or a host of other measures.
