Gloucestershire Warm & Well

Introduction

Gloucestershire Warm and Well began its work in October 2001 and is working to ensure as many people as possible are kept warm this winter, by making home owners and privately renting tenants homes more comfortable to live in and fuel efficient.

  • Since the scheme was set up, over 30,000 properties have been made energy efficient, resulting in warmer, more comfortable homes.

  • More than 41,000 energy efficiency measures, such as loft and cavity wall insulation have been installed.

  • Over £16,000,000 worth of energy efficiency measures installed.

  • Gloucestershire Warm and Well was the winner of the 2006 Ashden Award for energy efficiency.

Everyone is entitled to at least a partial grant towards insulation. All grants are subject to availability and survery, which is completely free and no obligation. All surveys and work are carried out by the accredited installer, Domestic & General Ltd.

There are grants available for:

  • Cavity wall insulation

  • Loft insulation

  • Draught proofing

  • Energy saving heating measures

Gloucestershire Warm and Well is managed by Severn Wye Energy Agency on behalf of the local authorities in Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire. We work together with the NHS and the insulation company, Domestic and General Ltd, to provide information on home insulation, energy efficiency and how to claim a grant towards energy efficiency measures.

Background

The central issues addressed are the link between energy efficiency and affordable warmth, cold living conditions and health. Gloucestershire Warm and Well aims to improve energy efficiency and reduce the levels of associated health risk through raising awareness of the issues and appropriate action, providing specific and appropriate advice to each household that comes into the scheme and enabling physical measures to be installed through referrals to grants and discount schemes. In June 2006, Gloucestershire Warm and Well was awarded an “Ashden Sustainable Energy Award” in the Energy Efficiency category.

The target groups for the scheme are defined as owner occupiers and tenants of private rented housing in Gloucestershire with members of the household who are vulnerable to health problems associated, those likely to be living in fuel poverty and unable to afford adequate heating in the home, as well of course, any other householders in Gloucestershire.

Gloucestershire Warm and Well works with various organisations and agencies and can directly refer householders on to the most relevant party to help them keep warm and healthy. Some of the organisations that Warm and Well can refer clients onto are Age Concern, The Adult Helpdesk, Fire and Rescue, The Citizens Advice Bureau and several others throughout the county.
