Domestic Environmental Management in Action
Background
DEMIA (Domestic Environmental Management in Action) is a
project approved under the DEFRA funded Environmental Action Fund in 2005.
Aims
The project aims to engage with four communities of about 500
homes each, in the London Boroughs of Southwark, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets and
in Herefordshire. Householders within these four communities are invited to
join a local Environmental Services Company called HelpCo. SWEA is managing
project activities relating to the Herefordshire community.
Activities
By joining HelpCo householders will be eligible for a free
environmental survey of their home which will include the installation of
basic energy efficiency measures such as draught proofing, hot water tank
jackets, low energy light bulbs and reflective radiator panels. The
householder then receives a personal home energy action plan with energy
reduction targets and key energy efficiency measures identified.
If the householder agrees to submit regular meter readings to
HelpCo they will also receive ongoing energy monitoring and feedback in
relation to their targets. Where appropriate householders will also be
referred on for loft, cavity wall and floor insulation, solar water heating
and/or solar photovoltaic panels.
In the first year of the DEMiA project:
-
744 surveys were carried out in the four communities
-
Over 2,000 energy efficiency, water saving and recycling
measures were installed
-
These measures have resulted in savings of 182 tonnes of CO2
and 335,800 litres of water
Partners
The project partners are SWEA, HelpCo Heat Light and Power
Company, National Energy Action (NEA) and Herefordshire Council. |
