Action for Affordable Warmth

Background

The Forest of Dean is seen as having excellent potential for wood fuel due to its extensive woodland and forestry resources and local expertise in timber based activities. There are also large numbers of properties without access to the mains gas network  where wood fuel could be particularly cost-effective. This adds up to great potential for new employment and business opportunities using local wood fuel  to meet local heating needs.

Aims

The Biorreg-Forest Heat Project was set up to encourage the development of local wood fuel use and supply within the Forest of Dean.

Activities

The UK work programme for Biorreg-Forest Heat focused on:

Wood Fuel Resource Evaluation - Quantifying and mapping of biomass resources in the Forest of Dean area.

Biomass Pre-feasibility surveys—ten wood-fuel heating surveys of local businesses or public buildings to encourage development of the market

Project development support - assistance for local organisations with location installers, accessing grants and obtaining permits required for wood heating projects

Development of local wood fuel supply chain infrastructure

Sharing of experiences with European partners

Results

Resource Assessment

The resource assessment revealed a significant un-tapped resource of wood including:

46,000 oven dry tonnes per annum of forestry residues

6,000 oven-dried tonnes of wood waste from both primary and secondary processing waste from Forest based timber processing activities

Wood Fuel Supply Chain

Facilities and equipment for harvesting, chipping, storage, drying and delivery of wood fuel are available through local organisations. It is estimated that wood fuel can be delivered to end users within a twenty mile radius of the Forest for under £40 per tonne

Market Development

A 25kW wood chip boiler has been installed at an organic farm shop

A 100kW wood pellet boiler has been installed at an environmental education centre
