The development of a Renewable Energy Action Plan is a locally led initiative involving all the local authorities in Wiltshire and a range of local organisations and individuals with an interest in how renewable energy is developed in Wiltshire. The plan will:

  • Identify the actions needed to develop renewable energy in an appropriate and sustainable way within the county
  • List who should be involved in each action
  • Suggest which actions will need extra resources and where they might come from
Although the Action Plan recognises the importance of government policy its success will be also be heavily dependent on the achievements of local organisations and individuals. This consultation process aims to involve a wide range of local stakeholders in developing a successful Action Plan for Wiltshire and Swindon.

The process of the development of the Action Plan is as follows: -

September 2002 - Wiltshire Renewable Energy Forum first meeting to initiate work on a renewable energy strategy
January 2003 - April 2004 - REvision 2010 process - County sign up to renewable electricity targets for 2010
January - June 2004 - Development of the draft Action Plan for consultation and the consultation process.
Autumn 2004 - Action Plan stakeholder sign-up and launch
Autumn 2004 onwards - Action Plan implementation

The Wiltshire Renewable Energy Forum has led to the development of the draft Action Plan (the discussion document).

The Action Plan aims to help deliver the county target for Wiltshire of 65-85MW of renewable electricity generating capacity by 2010, which is the equivalent to supplying between 73,750 and 87,000 homes. It will also cover generation of heat from renewable sources and addresses the following issues in particular:-

  • Information and Awareness
  • Financial issues
  • Community Involvement
  • Targets and Monitoring
  • Strategic issues
  • Landscape
  • The Built Environment
  • Exemplar projects
