Background

With funding from the rural development program accessed through the Welsh Government, Ceredigion County Council have awarded this contract to support micro enterprises throughout the County access expertise to realise the installation and maximisation of renewable energy solutions.


Aims

The overall aim of the project is to significantly raise the profile of the importance of renewable energy and in turn achieve high numbers of installed renewable energy measures. This will be achieved by;

  • Working with 222 micro enterprises to identify opportunities.
  • Realising the installation of 74 renewable energy projects.
  • Taking advantage of feed-in tariffs and the renewable heat incentive.
  • Identifying external financial support where appropriate to help with the cost of installed measures.

Services

Severn Wye Energy Agency will be working with the locally controlled community benefit organisation, Ecodyfi to deliver this project. We shall be providing a range of awareness raising and promotional activities to support the aims of the project.

We can visit your premises to assess your energy use and the potential for generating your own electricity or heat. We will develop a network of local installers to support the realisation of appropriate installations.

Whilst this is a complex project the team are here to work with interested micro enterprises supporting them with each step of the process.

In addition to the identification of renewable energy options our site survey will also identify energy efficiency considerations to help reduce on going energy costs.

Within the report provided all measures identified will include details of likely costs, anticipated savings and the expected return on investment.

Funding

This project has received funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013 which is funded by the Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

Due to the nature of the funding there are some businesses that are ineligible for support from this project (although it is likely that these businesses can be supported through other programmes). These are businesses working within forestry, agriculture, and tourism. If you are unsure about your business status please do not hesitate to speak to us.

Benefits

As an example, utilising the renewable heat incentive (RHI) it is possible to achieve a 3.1 year return on investment when installing biomass heating to replace an oil fired heating system. Where current heating costs are around £9,000 p.a., an investment of £27,000 would reduce the fuel costs to just below £6,000 p.a. With a RHI payment of £5,700 made annually, the total financial benefit is almost £8,800. This payment is fixed for a period of 20 years. This example clearly shows the level of opportunity. Our team will provide similar calculations on other appropriate systems as required for your business.

Eligibility

This project is available to micro enterprises within Ceredigion that are not within the aforementioned sectors. The definition of a micro enterprise is a trading organisation employing fewer than 10 staff with an annual turnover of less than €2 million. The project is also available to social enterprises.

Illustration of Energy Efficiency

The above photos show a small business that has retrofitted lighting improvements. By installing LED lamps they were able to reduce their lighting costs by 66% which saved more than £1,500 per annum.

There are many other energy efficiency measures that will be assessed when we undertake the on site survey. These will include:
