Preserving Gloucestershire's heritage and environment
Reducing the environmental impact of communities in Gloucestershire
Lowering energy costs for community buildings
Improving comfort for users of village halls
Severn Wye Energy Agency (SWEA) worked in partnership with the Gloucestershire Environmental Trust Company (GET) from April 2007 to June 2010 on a project to promote sustainable energy in community and historic buildings. The collaboration was launched in the wake of the former Community Renewables Initiative, and was extended beyond its initial phase. The original aim was to assist 10 sites, although over 25 were eventually completed.
SWEA was able to visit qualifying sites for a comprehensive energy survey that examined the building fabric, heating systems, lighting and other building services. Our surveys were followed up by a full written report, outlining key energy efficiency measures, and the suitability of the building for one or more renewable energy technologies. Reports also offered advice on grant funding availability, both from the GET and other sources. GET grant funding itself is still available, and originates from the Landfill Communities Fund (LCF). The GET is responsible for re-distributing this income in a manner that enhances the quality of the environment for Gloucestershire and its people.

Our surveys were offered free of charge to organisations who show a commitment to improving the sustainability of their buildings: specifically, prior to a SWEA survey, projects needed to gain 'approval in principle' from ENTRUST, the organisation that regulates the LCF.
As part of the project agreement, SWEA also provided post-survey support to community building managers, with regard to seeking quotes, accessing grant money, dealing with planning issues and helping improvements to happen as quickly as possible.
